SHARON AMOS (she/her)
I stumbled upon yoga in 2011 on a quest to expand my “workout routine”. I’d developed a home exercise ritual due to a busy work and family life which left little time for the gym. Curious about yoga, I did a bit of research and found a highly rated yoga DVD on Amazon, Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga series (from the 90’s). I did the surprisingly difficult practices a few times, and was hooked from then on. No form of exercise that I had done prior gave the sense of calm, clarity, and spaciousness in my body that yoga provided for me. From there I dabbled in some yoga apps, and then finally got the nerve to try an actual class. Natasha Rizopoulos was recommended by a work colleague and fellow yogi, and she has been my teacher ever since.
I’ve been a Registered Oncology Nurse at the MGH Cancer Center here in Boston for many years. In doing this work, I’ve developed a profound appreciation for wellness, and our inherent ability to self regulate in order to get through difficult times. I’m drawn to yoga because it teaches how to individually develop these survival skills. I became a Yoga teacher because of how transformative it has been for me in many ways, and how inaccessible it can be for so many folks who may or may not look like me. My hope is to bring more people to yoga who would otherwise avoid this incredibly healing practice.
I completed my 200 & 300 hr Yoga teacher training, and 200 hr Ayurveda Certification (Yoga’s “sister” science) at the Down Under School of Yoga/ Boston Ayurveda School in Brookline. After completing my teacher trainings I began to also practice with Ame Wren, attending her Master classes regularly over the past few years. Natasha and Ame have been my biggest teacher influencers overall, and I am beyond grateful that we live in the same region!
I would describe my teaching style as an always evolving, alignment based “freestyle fusion” of everything I have learned and continue to learn as a forever student.
What You Can Expect From My Classes
My mixed levels yoga class is a reflection of my personal relationship with yoga. A mindfulness practice of balancing ease with effort both on and off the mat. Classes explore alignment based strengthening yoga postures linked with breath, movement, and stillness. The pace is slow to moderate and intentional, a moving meditation. There is always the invitation to explore one’s personal edges of the physical practice, and the same invitation to be with what your body feels like in the moment, to also practice cultivating self inquiry and awareness. Pose variations with the use of props for classes are offered, but optional at all levels for this reason.
