NIKKI GLENDYE (she/her)
My yoga journey began in 2020 when I found myself practicing on a bath towel (I wasn’t quite ready to invest in a mat) after being diagnosed with several health conditions. Encouraged by physical therapists, friends, and a sense of cosmic guidance, I decided to give yoga a try. Despite my initial hesitation, I embarked on a 30-day home practice to see if it could alleviate some of my symptoms. Little did I know, it would have a profound impact on my life far beyond the physical realm.
I committed to a daily asana practice, and the changes that unfolded both on and off the mat were extraordinary (yes, I eventually retired the bath towel for a mat!). Though it was a tumultuous time in my life, I found myself more centered, less reactive, and overall much more connected. I no longer felt the urge to “check out”; instead, for the first time in my life, my yoga practice showed me the joy of being checked in, here and now—even in the tumultuous moments.
In May 2023, I completed my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at JPCY, an experience that completely transformed my life and sense of purpose. Following the training, I started participating in work-study at JPCY and teaching monthly community classes. Being deeply immersed in JPCY’s community taught me the essence of collective care and genuine connection. I am honored to play a role in the community that has given so much to me, both as a teacher and, as of July 2024, in a management role.
What You Can Expect From My Classes
Having grappled with disconnection from my body, my deepest aspiration is to cultivate a supportive and empowering space where we can connect with, explore, and honor our bodies. I believe yoga is for everyone, so I strive to use inclusive language and offer various options to honor that principle. In my classes, you can expect various breathing techniques, consent-based hands-on adjustments, and the use of props in both supportive and creative ways.
Outside of the studio room, you can find me working in JPCY’s lobby (often on the extra comfy brown couch), cuddling my cat Lou, or thrifting at my favorite thrift stores in Boston.
