January 25th through February 1st, 2025
Discover the vibrant spirit of India in the bustling city of Mumbai, where ancient wisdom and tradition blends harmoniously with the vibrant modern culture of India.
Why Mumbai
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is an energetic metropolis on the west coast of India. Known for its vibrancy and diverse culture, this hub of creativity and innovation has it all! From the iconic Gateway of India to the bustling streets of Colaba, Mumbai offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern spark. Together we will experience the richness of its history, explore ancient temples, wander through bustling markets, relish in its divine food, and live it up in the art and music scene. There will also be ample free time to enjoy activities of your preference such as additional guided tours, shopping at designer boutiques, or relaxing on the sandy shores of a beach. With its dynamic mix of tradition and modernity, Mumbai truly captures the essence of India's spirit.
The Trip at a Glance
-
Tours & Leisure
We’ve got you connected with our favorite city guides to show you the most striking sacred and historical sites, temples and other local highlights. With them you will also experience the magic of wandering down the narrowest lanes where most tourists don’t venture. We also have a list of options for beaches, shops, and fun hangouts for those who want to venture independently.
-
Heritage Sites
Enjoy a coastal view of Mumbai as we set sail by ferry ride to Elephanta Island where ancient rock-cut caves date back to the 5th to 8th centuries. The caves are renowned for their intricate carvings, sculptures, and architecture, showcasing a blend of Hindu and Buddhist artistry.
-
Neighborhood Charm
Each of Mumbai's neighborhoods offer a distinct flavor of the city: Colaba’s colonial-era buildings and upscale boutiques, Bandra’s markets and vibrant street art, The Historic Fort area’s iconic architectural landmarks, and the hipster enclave of Kala Ghoda. We’re excited to introduce you to our most loved spots.
-
Arts & Music
We have some special art and musical treats planned for you! For one, we have purposefully timed this retreat with the 25th annual Kala Ghoda art festival which draws people in from all over India and features visual arts, dance, music, theatre, literature, and much more. Bostonians, imagine the Indian version of Boston Calling, Open Studios and PorchFest all in one week.

Please be in touch about any dietary requirements or allergies after registering.
Vegetarian, Vegan and Lactose Considerations:
It is very easy to maintain a vegetarian diet in India. We can cater to vegans as well but folks should be aware if eating independently that Indian food will often includes dairy in curries, stews, and some breads.
Gluten
Gluten is easily avoidable in India by choosing rice over chapatis and other local breads. You can use this printable card in Hindi to let someone know about your gluten intolerance. If you have other dietary needs, these cards are also available in Hindi.
Can I drink the water?
Generally no. We will be in some places where we know the water is filtered to an appropriate degree but when on your own, always purchase bottled water. Don't use tap water, even when brushing your teeth.

For those interested in staying in Mumbai for an extra day or two, our retreat ends on the Saturday of the giant music festival Lollapalooza (@lollaindia on Instagram). If you want to venture out of the city, you are a car ride away from the lush mountainous range of Lonavala or, for example, a short flight from the beaches of Goa.
